Europe and the US in the Early 19th Century

  Death,s Head by Pixerecourt, used a volcanic eruption to foil a villain and let the heros escape. Shridan's Pizarro (1799) used a large bridge that would crumble on demand so that these heros can escape their would be killers. This effect became more popular as melodramas became more popular.

Since it's in French, we both believe that this is some sort of stage design.
